He credits his escape from crime to his high school coach and his parents for laying down the law as well as the shock of seeing a friend get shot. A highly recruited high school player, he played three years at Notre Dame before turning pro with the Rams (both L.A. and St. Louis). During the latter part of his 13-year career, he had to compete for playing time and deal with a litany of injuries. For his last pro football game, he returned triumphantly to Detroit, which hosted the 2006 Super Bowl. Writing in an easygoing, honest voice, Bettis gives readers a good look at the inside stories of college recruiting, professional contracts and the agony of NFL injuries. He also dishes out opinions on players, calling former Rams quarterback Jim Everett soft as puppy fur and Denver Broncos linebacker Bill Romanowski a coward who specialized in cheap shots. He became a Detroit prep star, earned a scholarship to Notre Dame, and after a successful career there, went on to stardom with the St. Louis Rams and later the Steelers. socalsteelersfan - In a new autobiography by former Steeler Merril Hoge entitled Find a Way, he shares personal stories of family tragedies, the head injury that ended his pro football career and his struggle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma cancer. He explains his life experiences in hopes that others might find their way through his inspirational text. The Steeler fan in me also enjoyed reading about what it was like for Hoge in the late 80's to start out as a rookie with the likes of Greg Lloyd and Rod Woodson, as well as a first hand account of Chuck Noll's last years as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. It was great reading this book at my sports bar while waiting for the Steelers game to start and you will too. |

socalsteelersfan - One of the best things about Pittsburgh Steelers: The Complete Illustrated History is right at the beginning. In the forward by Dick Hoak it was great to learn of his life as a Steeler, especially the honest account of how he considered quitting the team during training camp. Another great thing is the photography - the central element of the book. Many of the historical color and black and white photos are both rare and spectacular. I also liked the alumni player profiles which cover a wide spectrum of Steelers past and present. There are event profiles covering the Immaculate Reception and all of the Super Bowl victories but not including some key evens from earlier in Steelers history. Missing are profiles for their only appearance in a playoff game before 1972 (Steelers vs. Eagles in 1947) and the 1952 Giants game, considered one of the greatest Steeler game of all time. Despite this one shortcoming, overall the book was a joy to read. The complied photographs, quotes and historical facts make this book worth purchasing.

socalsteelersfan – “One for the Thumb” says it all! I still believe that the road to Super Bowl XL truly started in a December snow game played in Heinz Field won against the Chicago Bears, which started an 8 game wining streak. Unfortunately this game may never appear in it’s entirely on a DVD, I miss watching The Bus plough through snow!

socalsteelersfan – I always watch all of my old Steeler videos and DVDs every year to help get myself through the off season, but it's even nicer after we've won the Super Bowl. All I can say is that Iv been watching this one about every week especially the part with James Harrison's Immaculate Interception. I like the extras, but most of all the touching Rod Woodson's Interview with Dick Lebeau and the mini doc that explains why Big Ben prays on the field before every game.
